Located on London’s famous South Bank and boasting views across the river to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London is one of the largest hotels to open in the capital for many years. The property, which opened in 2010, is the ideal location for conferences and business events and features more than a thousand guest rooms and 2,700 square meters of flexible meeting space.
BUJ Architects and Uri Blumenthal Architects & Town Planners worked together to design a building that would maximize the awkward island site while taking in the impressive surrounding views. To create the vast areas required for the hotel’s conferencing facilities, the designers dug down to produce a three story “layered” space.
Amenities at the central London accommodation include the 1,200 square meter, pillar-free Westminster Ballroom. As part of their lighting design, Israeli-based Ran Troim Lighting Design specified 158 trimless DR7 remote controlled luminaires for the space. With a maximum capacity of 1,400 people, the ballroom can be split into four separate areas making it suitable for a number of events – big or small.
RCL’s patented “Select & Direct” technology allows tables to be set up before the lighting has been adjusted, adding greater flexibility and ensuring the best possible pinspotting every time.
Aiming the spotlights from floor level avoids the delays associated with using ladders and mechanical lifts, resulting in a quicker turnaround between functions. Furthermore, the recessed luminaires have created an additional revenue stream for the hotel, which is able to charge for pinspotting tables at events.
