The Shangri-La Hotel in Beijing first opened its doors in 1987 and has established itself as one of the finest hotels in Beijing, playing host to numerous dignitaries from around the world over the last quarter of a century. Since then, the hotel has been through a number of refurbishments, most recently in 2007 with the opening of the Valley Wing, however the property has always remained a luxurious respite from its vibrant city surroundings.
Located in the heart of Beijing’s financial and technological district, the hotel is situated only 30 minutes from the capital’s airport making it an ideal location for both business and leisure travelers alike. After the latest redevelopment, the property now features 670 guestrooms and suites as well as various restaurants and bars and exceptional hospitality facilities.
The most recent refurbishment of the Valley Wing saw the hotel’s event and meeting spaces expand to a total of 30, ensuring that no matter what the requirements of the client, the Shangri-La, Beijing is able to accommodate them. Pivotal to the hotel’s hospitality facilities is the Grand Ballroom; a 1,350 square meter space with 8.1m ceilings that can be split into three smaller spaces. With the potential to cater to up to 1,400 people, the ballroom is the perfect venue for different events, ranging from weddings to conventions.
With its tall ceilings and versatile nature, the hotel’s Grand Ballroom is an ideal candidate for RCL’s “Select & Direct” technology. Lawrence Lee of Light Source International specified track-mounted DR2 spotlights for a flexible lighting scenario. The DR2 luminaires provide pinspotting across the space, offering the Shangri-La’s events team a quick and flexible solution for table lighting. Adjusting the lights in pan and tilt allows the staff to precisely focus the luminaires without the need for mechanical lifts or scaffolding and with built-in dimmers, individual lights can be quickly switched off when not in use.
